The West District Division 1 season has come to a close, and once again it was Western 3rd XI who stood above the rest to claim the title and lift the prestigious John S. Dick Trophy.
Western Complete Another Dominant Campaign
Western secured the championship for the 26th time and made it three titles in a row with another exceptional season at the top of the division.
An unbeaten campaign, combined with a staggering 136 goals scored, demonstrated their quality and consistency throughout the year as they swept aside all challengers.
Leading the way was prolific forward Douglas Simpson, who finished as the division’s top scorer with an incredible 40 goals. Captain Barry Kane also enjoyed a superb season in front of goal, ending the campaign second in the scoring charts with 25 goals.
Hillhead Best of the Rest
Hillhead 4th XI proved to be Western’s closest challengers and secured a deserved second-place finish after a strong and consistent season.
Despite their efforts, the gap to the champions ultimately proved too great, though they comfortably held off the chasing pack behind them.
Rottenrow finished third after another competitive campaign, while Clydesdale 3rd XI rounded off the top four, with both sides ending the season on 33 points.
Tight Mid-Table Battle
The middle of Division 1 remained fiercely competitive throughout the season.
Giffnock, Helensburgh, Hillhead 5th XI and Clydesdale 4th XI were separated by just four points as positions changed regularly across the campaign.
Each side enjoyed strong spells during the season and ultimately secured comfortable mid-table finishes in an evenly matched section of the division.
Relegation Heartbreak
At the foot of the table, it proved to be a disappointing season for both Glasgow University 3rd XI and Kelburne 3rd XI, who will play Division 2 hockey next season.
Both sides battled throughout the campaign but ultimately fell short during the crucial closing stages as results elsewhere went against them.
Another Memorable Season
From Western’s relentless dominance to closely fought battles throughout the table, Division 1 once again delivered an entertaining and competitive season of West District hockey.
With promotions, relegations and another trophy added to Western’s impressive history, attention now turns towards next season and the challenges ahead.
