Another thrilling season of West District Division 2 hockey has come to an end, with dominant champions, a remarkable promotion push and a tense relegation battle keeping things exciting throughout the campaign.
Uddingston 3rd XI Bounce Straight Back
At the top, Uddingston 3rd XI proved untouchable as they secured the Division 2 title and an immediate return to Division 1.
An outstanding season saw them drop just two points all year, courtesy of a draw against Greenock 2nd XI, while their statistics highlighted their dominance:
- 124 goals scored
- Only 16 conceded
Their attacking quality was clear throughout the campaign, with both Findlay McFarlane and Hunter Borland featuring prominently among the division’s top scorers.
Dumfries Surge to Promotion
Perhaps the story of the season belonged to Dumfries, who produced a stunning turnaround in form to secure second place and promotion.
Having sat fifth midway through the campaign, Dumfries won eight of their final ten matches to storm into the promotion places in impressive fashion.
A huge part of that success came from Ryan Johnston, whose remarkable return of 30 goals helped drive the side towards Division 1 hockey next season.
GHK and Rottenrow Fall Narrowly Short
The battle for promotion remained fiercely competitive right until the closing weeks, with both GHK and Rottenrow 2nd XI spending much of the season swapping places in the race for second.
Both sides produced strong campaigns and remained firmly in contention throughout, but ultimately fell just short at the final hurdle.
Survival Battle Goes to the Wire
At the foot of the table, it proved to be a difficult season for Ayr and Strathclyde University 2nd XI, who will both play in Division 3 next year.
Meanwhile, both Western 4th XI and Kelburne 4th XI found themselves heavily involved in the relegation battle before picking up crucial wins late in the season to preserve their Division 2 status.
Strong Mid-Table Seasons
Elsewhere, Uddingston 4th XI, Greenock 2nd XI and Hillhead 6th XI all enjoyed solid campaigns in mid-table.
For Hillhead, Neil Macey once again proved a key figure in attack, finishing the season with an impressive 20 goals.
A Division Full of Quality
Division 2 once again showcased the competitiveness and unpredictability of West District hockey, with title-winning consistency, dramatic promotion races and survival battles all contributing to a memorable season.
With promotion and relegation now confirmed, attention will soon shift towards next year’s campaign and another fascinating chapter in Division 2 hockey. ????
