There were several surprising results from this weekend’s hockey. Let’s take a look:

The inform team in division one was Rottenrow prior to this weekend, but Kelburne 3rd XI pulled off an impressive 2-1 win over the title contenders. Iain Scholefield and Ross Young were both on target for Kelburne, as they cancelled out Rottenrow’s Morgan Kelly goal. The 3rd XIs overcame the 4th XI’s at Auchenhowie this weekend, as Western 3rd XI defeated Hillhead 4th XI 8-1. whilst Hillhead 3rd XI put seven past Western 4th XI without reply. Clydesdale 4th XI moved clear at the top of the district after a relatively simple 4-1 defeat of Helensburgh. The other match saw tempers flare as Uddingston 3rd XI saw red. Giffnock were the winners at Eastwood High School, with a 4-2 victory over Uddingston 3rd XI.

In division two, two unbeaten sides finally lost in some competitive hockey. It was an exciting game at Titwood as Dumfries defeated Clydesdale 4th XI 5-4. The win moves Dumfries to within a point of the top two sides – a hat-trick from Mac McFarlane was the highlight of the game. Ayr also lost at home, losing their undefeated status, as Glasgow University 3rd XI took all three points back to Glasgow. The students side moves to within two points of top spot. Elsewhere, Rottenrow 2nd XI overcame struggling Uddingston 4th XI and Hillhead 5A defeated Hillhead 5B 3-1.

It was a comfortable win for the students of Strathclyde University 2nd XI as they put seven past Helensburgh 2nd XI, winning 7-1. The win puts them into second place, in division three, but third placed Anchor have two games in hand. They remain five points behind league leaders Kelburne 4th XI who overcame Hillhead 6th XI at the weekend. Two goals for George Shalka and two for Gordon Menzies saw Kelburne win 4-1 over Hillhead 6th XI.

Division four leaders Clydesdale 5th XI defeated Dumfries 3rd XI with a comfortable 5-1 win. Finlay Dunlop extended his lead at the top of the scoring charts with another for Clydesdale. The other match in the division saw Hillhead 7th XI take on Hillhead 8th XI. The derby match finished with a 3-0 win to the 8th team.
