The weather had its say across the West District on Saturday, with postponements sweeping through the fixture list and some sides left waiting for calmer conditions. But for the teams who did make it onto the pitch, there was still plenty of action — including a five-goal thriller in Division 1, a big win for Kelburne 3 and an eight-goal haul for Clydesdale 6.

With games called off and others disrupted by the elements, it was a weekend when simply getting the match played was a result in itself.

Division 1: Rottenrow weather the storm in thriller

The headline result came from Rottenrow, who edged a seven-goal thriller against Giffnock, winning 5–4 away from home. In a match that refused to settle, Rottenrow found just enough to take all three points.

Western 3 enjoyed a more comfortable afternoon, beating Hillhead 5 4–1. Greenock were equally impressive, recording a 5–0 victory over Uddingston 3 to keep their momentum going.

League leaders Clydesdale 3 continued their strong start with a 4–0 win over Helensburgh, while Clydesdale 4 came through a tighter contest against Kelburne 2, claiming a 2–1 victory.

The results leave Clydesdale 3 looking formidable at the top, while Rottenrow’s win will give them a welcome boost after a difficult start to the campaign.

Division 2: Kelburne cruise as weather takes its toll

Kelburne 3 produced one of the day’s standout performances in Division 2, defeating Western 4 5–1 to underline their credentials near the top end of the table.

It was a much more frustrating afternoon elsewhere. Rottenrow 3 and GHK were locked at 1–1 when their match was abandoned, leaving both sides without the chance to see the contest through. Meanwhile, Ayr against Clydesdale 5 and Glasgow University 3 against Uddingston 4 were both postponed as the weather continued to wreak havoc.

Rottenrow 2 versus Dumfries also failed to produce a confirmed result on the day’s scoresheet.

For Kelburne, the points were a welcome reward on a weekend when plenty of rivals were left watching the forecast rather than chasing goals.

Division 3: Clydesdale hit eight in emphatic win

Clydesdale 6 made sure the weather wasn’t the only thing making an impact, powering to an 8–1 victory over Helensburgh 2.

The result was particularly emphatic, with David Miller helping himself to a hat-trick in a dominant Clydesdale display. Helensburgh 2, meanwhile, will be keen to regroup after a difficult afternoon.

Elsewhere, the weather proved the winner before a ball could be played in two fixtures, with Giffnock 2 versus Hillhead 7 and Anchor versus Hillhead 8 both postponed. Kelburne 4’s meeting with Strathclyde University 2 also had no confirmed score on the results sheet.

A weekend to weather

Saturday offered a reminder that the West District season is not always plain sailing. Some teams made the most of their opportunity, others were left frustrated by the conditions, and the abandoned clash between Rottenrow 3 and GHK was a stark example of how quickly plans can change.

With postponed fixtures still to be rearranged, the league tables will continue to evolve as teams look to make up lost ground.

For now, the focus turns to the next round — and hopefully a little less storm, and a lot more hockey.
