After a summer break, West District hockey returns this weekend as clubs across the region prepare for another season of league competition. New players, new challenges and fresh ambitions await as teams begin their pursuit of league titles, promotion and cup success. Following an exciting 2025/26 campaign, the stage is set for another memorable year of hockey across the West.
The Season Ahead
Division 1
The top flight has expanded to 11 teams this season and there are some intriguing new additions. Kelburne 2nd XI and Greenock have both dropped out of the Regional leagues to join the West District setup, bringing plenty of quality and experience into an already competitive division. Joining them are Uddingston 3rd XI, who return to Division 1 after an outstanding title-winning campaign last season.
With Western 3rd XI beginning their defence of a fourth consecutive title, and several clubs looking to challenge the established order, Division 1 could be one of the most interesting in recent years.
Division 2
There is a different feel to Division 2 this season. With champions Uddingston 3rd XI moving up, the division loses the side that set the pace throughout last year, leaving the race for promotion looking wide open.
Relegated sides Kelburne 3rd XI and Glasgow University 3rd XI will both fancy their chances of an immediate return to Division 1, while clubs such as GHK, Rottenrow 2nd XI and Dumfries will believe they have unfinished business after last season’s closely fought promotion battle.
The newcomers only add to the intrigue. Clydesdale 5th XI arrive after two remarkable seasons that have seen them win promotion without losing a league match, while Rottenrow 3rd XI continue their rapid rise after securing promotion in their inaugural campaign. With 11 teams and plenty of ambitious sides, predicting the top of the table may prove impossible.
Division 3
Division 3 remains the foundation of men’s hockey in the West District. For many clubs it provides the opportunity to develop young players, welcome newcomers into the game and give experienced players regular hockey.
This season’s division features 11 teams, including relegated sides Greenock 2nd XI and Kelburne 4th XI, who will both be looking to regroup and challenge near the top of the table. Across the division there is a blend of youth and experience, established club players alongside those taking their first steps into senior hockey. The league may not grab the headlines in the same way as the divisions above, but year after year it continues to play a vital role in the strength and future of hockey across the West District.
Opening Weekend Fixtures
With pre-season complete and squads finalised, attention now turns to the opening round of fixtures. While league tables are empty and form is still unknown, every club will be looking to start the season on the right foot.
Can anyone stop the champions? Western begin their title defence away to Greenock, looking to continue the form that saw them go unbeaten last season.
The newly promoted Clydesdale 5th XI haven’t lost a league match in two seasons. Their first match in Division 2, against Hillhead 6th XI, will be an early indication of whether that remarkable run can continue.
After relegation from Division 2, Greenock will be hoping to make an immediate impact and lay down an early marker. They travel to Clydesdale 6th XI.
