The new West District season is only one week old, but there are already some intriguing fixtures on the horizon as clubs look to build momentum and climb the early league tables.
Division 1
The headline fixture sees defending champions Western 3rd XI travel to Kelburne 2nd XI at the ON-X in Linwood. Western were held to a surprise draw by Greenock on the opening day, while Kelburne suffered defeat in their first match after dropping from the Regional leagues. Both sides will be eager to make an early statement. At the High School of Glasgow, Hillhead 4th XI welcome Clydesdale 3rd XI. With Clydesdale just getting their season underway, they’ll be hoping to hit the ground running against a Hillhead side that narrowly lost out to Rottenrow last weekend. Meanwhile, Helensburgh make the trip to Titwood for a midday pushback against Clydesdale 4th XI. Both teams will be looking to get points on the board as the season begins to take shake.
Division 2
One of the standout fixtures across the district sees newly promoted Clydesdale 5th XI travel to the National Hockey Centre to face Rottenrow 2nd XI. After two season without tasting league defeat, Clydesdale have made a strong start to life in Division 2, but Rottenrow will provide one their toughest tests yet. Ayr finally get their campaign underway as they host recently relegated Kelburne 3rd XI. Both sides will have ambitions of challenging near the top of the table, making this an important early-season encounter. Elsewhere, Uddingston 4th XI begin their season at home to Rottenrow 3rd XI, who will be looking to build on a positive opening weekend.
Division 3
There are only two matches in Division 3 this weekend, but both feature sides making their first appearance of the campaign. Giffnock 2nd XI begin their season at home to Hillhead 8th XI, with the visitors arriving full of confidence after an impressive opening-day victory. The division’s other fixture sees Dumfries 2nd XI make the long journey north to face Clydesdale 6th XI in Glasgow. Both sides will be eager to start their seasons on the right foot and lay down an early marker.
With leagues tables beginning to form and clubs settling into the new campaign, Week Two already promises another busy weekend of West District hockey.
