With the season beginning to find its rhythm, this weekend’s West District fixtures offer plenty of intrigue across all three divisions. League leaders face stern tests, local rivalries take centre stage, and several sides are still searching for their first points of the campaign.

Division 1

League leaders Giffnock saw their unbeaten start brought to an end in midweek by defending champions Western 3rd XI. The champions will be looking to build on that victory as they continue their title defence, while Giffnock will be eager to show their strong start was no fluke.

One of the standout fixtures takes place at the National Hockey Centre, where Rottenrow welcome Greenock. Both sides have made encouraging starts to the campaign and will see this as an opportunity to lay down an early marker in the race towards the top end of the table.

At Titwood, local bragging rights are on the line as Clydesdale 3rd XI face Clydesdale 4th XI in the season’s first intra-club derby. Both teams have opened the campaign well, making this one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the weekend.

Elsewhere, Kelburne 2nd XI will be hoping home advantage can help them secure their first points of the season when they host Hillhead 5th XI, while Uddingston 3rd XI travel to Balgray to take on a Hillhead 4th XI side still searching for their first win of the campaign.

Division 2

At the top of the table, Clydesdale 5th XI continue to set the pace. Their unbeaten league record may have been halted by a draw last weekend, but they remain the team to catch as they welcome Uddingston 4th XI, who will be looking to build momentum after a positive start to their own campaign.

One of the standout fixtures of the division takes place at the ON-X, where Kelburne 3rd XI host GHK. Both clubs have ambitions of challenging for promotion and an early victory over a direct rival could prove significant as the season develops.

Elsewhere, Western 4th XI welcome Hillhead 6th XI, while Ayr host Rottenrow 3rd XI in another match that could have implications at both ends of the table later in the season.

Division 3

The final division sees several sides still settling into the new campaign. Strathclyde University 2nd XI finally get their season underway with a home fixture against current league leaders Anchor. Having both suffered relegation last season, the two sides will be hoping to mount promotion challenges this time around.

Helensburgh 2nd XI return to action with a difficult trip to face an experienced Uddingston 5th XI, while Hillhead 8th XI make the journey south to take on Dumfries 2nd XI at the recently relaid King George V Playing Fields.

At Eastwood High School, Giffnock 2nd XI host Kelburne 4th XI, while Clydesdale 6th XI travel to face Hillhead 7th XI as both sides look to climb the early-season standings.

As September continues, the league tables are beginning to take shape, but there is still plenty of hockey to be played and plenty of stories yet to unfold across the West District.
