The league is taking a break this weekend and we turn our attention to the George Black Trophy first round.

Preliminary Round

Two matches took place prior to round one, in the George Black Trophy. Western 4th XI hosted Hillhead 6th XI, with the Hillhead side coming out on top in a tightly contested affair. Andrew MacLaine and Matthew Spurnley got the two goals. The other match saw Giffnock defeat Rottenrow 2nd XI 4-0 at Eastwood High School.

First Round

Several games are taking place this weekend in the George Black Trophy with a number of exciting fixtures to look forward to. It’s a tough ask for Ayr, as they travel to holders Western 3rd XI, whilst a tight contest is expected at the High School of Glasgow as GHK host Glasgow University 3rd XI. Clydesdale 4th XI had the upper hand over Kelburne 3rd XI last season, but both sides are now in consistent form. It could be a close scoreline. Giffnock have started the season well in the league, and will be keen to take that form into the cup as they host Hillhead 6th at Eastwood.

There are two all division one clashes in round one, with Hillhead 5th XI hosting Rottenrow at Balgray. The two sides played each other in September, with Hillhead coming out on top but the cup can be a different ball game. The other all division one clash sees Helensburgh travel to Kelburne 2nd XI. These two sides have yet to meet in the league but both are struggling for league form so the cup could be a welcome break. The lowest ranked side in the competition faces tough opposition at Millerstone, as Strathclyde University 2nd XI host Hillhead 4th XI – this one could provide a cup upset! The final match see’s Clydesdale 3rd XI travel south to face Dumfries. Dumfries will be hoping the new home pitch will give them the edge in what could be another tight contest.

With plenty of big matches taking place, who do you think can go all the way in the Cup this year?
