The preliminary rounds are almost complete and the first round of the George Black Trophy has started!

The cup competition can always throw up some interesting games and this year was no different. The preliminary round of the trophy has been taking place over the last month with several close games. Glasgow University 3rd XI will want to forget their opening match as Uddingston 4th XI overcame them a comfortable 6-1 despite the two sides having similar league results in division two. Kelburne 4th XI caused a small upset as they defeated Hillhead C, a primarily division two side. Kelburne 4th XI sit top of division three just now but won 4-2 against the higher opposition. It was a close game between Strathclyde University 2nd XI and Hillhead D, as the students won 1-0. The other game saw another tight match between Greenock 2nd XI and Hillhead B, in which Hillhead won 2-1.

The first round of the George Black trophy will begin next month, with one match having already been completed. The all division two clash between GHK and Ayr was a thriller, with GHK winning 6-3. Several all division one clashes see Kelburne 3rd XI hosting Uddingston 3rd XI, Clydesdale A travelling to Helensburgh and last season’s champions, Western 3rd XI take on Hillhead A. Kelburne 4th XI could continue with the upsets, as they host Giffnock – a whole two divisions of difference between them. Another tasty looking tie is the match between Strathclyde University 2nd XI and Dumfries.
All matches will be complete by the end of the year, with the plate competition also due to start just after the New Year.
