The sun shone brightly on what was an excellent day of hockey at Upper Windyedge, on Saturday – a day that George Black himself would have loved!

The day was always set up to be an excellent affair with four top West District sides competing in the two finals. The West District Plate was first with Hillhead B taking on Helensburgh. The match was a very open one with both sides showing plenty of attacking flair. It was Hillhead who looked the more dangerous however, but Helensburghs goalkeeper kept the scoring low with some outstanding saves.Hillhead got the opener with a penalty flick before adding a second just before half time. Helensburgh did have chances in the second half but a third goal for Hillhead sealed the deal, with the West District Plate falling into the Hillhead teams hands!

Full Time: Hillhead B 3 – 0 Helensburgh

The George Black Trophy was up next, being competed between the top two sides in the district, Clydesdale A vs. Western 3. Another match that showed off the talents of the district, with plenty of excellent hockey on display. Western opened the scoring with a well constructed penalty corner, doubling their lead just before half time. Clydesdale were in the match for the whole game, creating plenty of chances themselves, but it was Western who got a third early in the second half. There was a late consolation goal for the ‘dale but it was too little too late and Western retained the George Black Trophy for the second year running.

Congratulations to both winners and commiserations to the losers. A big thank you to the four umpires who blew the whistle for the matches and a massive thanks to Ali from pinkhatphotos for all the pictures from the day.

And finally, thanks to all those who came and supported the teams and event. It makes it all worthwhile, and what a way to end the season.
