The third round of West District league fixtures provided plenty of talking points across all three divisions, with defending champions continuing their dominance, new contenders making statements, and several matches falling victim to the weather.

Division 1: Western Set the Pace

Defending champions Western 3rd XI continued their strong start to the season ending Giffnock’s unbeaten start in midweek, with a 4-0 victory, which is why they remain the team everyone is chasing.

One of the standout results of the weekend came at the National Hockey Centre, where Greenock continued their excellent return to West District hockey with a 4-2 win over Rottenrow. Having already taken points from Western on the opening weekend, Greenock look more than capable of competing near the top end of the table.

There were also local bragging rights on the line at Titwood as Clydesdale 3rd XI overcame their clubmates Clydesdale 4th XI by 3 goals to nil, maintaining their unbeaten start and keeping themselves firmly in the promotion conversation.

At the other end of the table, Kelburne 2nd XI picked up their first point of the campaign in a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Hillhead 5th XI.

With three rounds played, Western have already established themselves as the early pace-setters, but Greenock, Clydesdale 3rd XI and Giffnock remain well placed to challenge.

Division 2: GHK Move Into Position

With two fixtures postponed, Division 2 saw only two matches completed, but both could prove significant as the season develops.

GHK secured a valuable 3-1 away victory over Kelburne 3rd XI, continuing an impressive start to the campaign. A brace from John Giblin and one from Larry Payne helped GHK maintain their push towards the top of the table and handed recently relegated Kelburne another difficult afternoon.

At Doonside, Rottenrow 3rd XI got their first points in three matches with a 4-2 victory over Ayr. Goals were shared throughout the side as the newly promoted outfit started to show they belong at this level.

While still early days, GHK have positioned themselves well among a group of sides expected to challenge for promotion, while Rottenrow 3rd XI continue to impress in their first Division 2 campaign.

Division 3: Kelburne and Clydesdale Continue Strong Starts

Division 3 saw another mixed programme of results.

Recently relegated Kelburne 4th XI recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory away to Giffnock 2nd XI, continuing a positive start to life in the third tier.

In Uddingston, Uddingston 5th XI proved too strong for Helensburgh 2nd XI, running out 3-1 winners. Mark Strachan’s brace helped secure the points, with Daniel Dooley on target for the visitors.

One of the most entertaining matches of the day took place at Balgray where Clydesdale 6th XI edged out Hillhead 7th XI by 3 goals to 2. A double from David Miller proved decisive as Clydesdale claimed another important victory.

With several sides still having games in hand, the Division 3 table remains difficult to read, but Kelburne 4th XI and Clydesdale 6th XI have both made encouraging starts.
